23 Sigurd Hoel (1890-1960) was a novelist and short story writer, as well as the editor of Gyldendalâs series of translated modern novels, which introduced Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner, Kafka, and dozens of other key 20th-century writers to Norwegian audiences. Thus, Hoel would be a double target of Mørkâs wrath, as not only an author of modern fiction, but also a transÂlator and publisher of other authorsâ works. In an obituary, Bjerke wrote that if Hoel had written in English, he âwould have had a worldwide reputationâ.
